North Coast 500
1st August 2017
Q. Which cycling challenge will you be taking on this Summer?
A. I’m doing the North Coast 500 route in August with my brother, younger sister and some close friends, my mum is driving the camper.
Q. What does the North Coast 500 entail?
A. The route is 500 miles and over 10,000m of vertical climb from Inverness to Inverness following the coast in a clockwise direction, we’re taking 6 days to cycle this with a break day in the middle. A trial by fire for most of our group who aren’t used to 100km+ days never mind 6 in a week.
On day 1 we do the coast to coast from Inverness to Applecross having finished with the “Bealach na Ba” pass a 600m climb with gradients up to 20%!
Q. It’s a great design, how did it come about?
A. We wanted something a bit special kit wise and Fraser poured over designs for hours before coming to the tartan/Tunnock’s combo.
Tunnock’s have been incredibly kind letting us use their designs and have actually sponsored me in my endeavours this summer. Caramel wafers and teacakes are going to be the main source of calories across the 6 days!
Q. Tell us more about your cycling companions for this trip?
A. My brother and I have always wanted to do an epic ride and this suites the bill! He (Fraser) is a 6ft 4 former prop and weighs in at 115kg at the moment so he’s doing his best to get as much climbing in before we set off! It’s also his birthday on our second days riding so we’re looking forward to seeing some streamers/balloons tied to his bike! My mum is just happy to be involved and loves coming back to Scotland whenever she can (she’s Glasweigan), my little sister Kirstie was just coming to keep mum company in the camper but has now decided to buy a bike and is going to cycle for as much of it as possible.
Q. You’ve been doing quite a lot of fundraising this year, can you tell us more?
A. For me it’s the end of a summer of fund raising, I did the wowcyclothon race around Iceland (also in AKUMA) and we managed to come second, I’ve raised £510 so far. I’m doing an Ironman triathlon in Nice on Sunday the 23rd July as my main event this summer and hoping to raise £1000 between the three cycling based events!
Q. How have you found the process with AKUMA?
A. I really appreciate you guys turning the kit around so quickly and all your help getting it designed!
